Birth of Boramae

Establishment of Army and Foundation of the Air Force Academy
(Before the Independence ∼ April.1954)

The Air Force Academy started with 97 cadets entered to the Academy on June 10th, 1949. In its half-century history, it has inherited the spirit of armed fight of independence of Korean temporary government that was built with the March 1st movement and it also has inherited the basic spirit of armed fight of the Korean temporary government that was built on October 18, 1948. It has realized the basic ideology, liberal democracy of the Korean government that was built on October 18, 1948. Through this, it has trained Air Force officers who will be on top of the important national task, the nation's peaceful unity. Our Academy

was renamed from Aviation Academy to Air Force Academy with the Air Force independence on October 1, 1949. In the next year, June 25, 1950, when the Korean War broke out with the invasion of North Korea, the Academy was moved from Kimpo to Daegu, Jinhae, Seoul, Mosulpo of Chejudo and finally back to Jinhae. It has put its utmost efforts to educate and train cadets. Under the belief "We guard our nation's sky with our hands", the Academy was built at Kimpo's open field. With the strike of Korean War, it was settled in Jinhae in May of 1951 and three superintendents had accessed until the academy was straightened out. The First Superintendent, Lieutenant Colonel Kim, Jung-Ryul did a great service in selecting the first-entered cadets and preparing the educational environment. After the first-class cadets entered, with the educational motto as "Vigor of Quality" and "Loyalty Valor Diligence Frugality", he emphasized that cadets develop into first rank air commanders. Colonel Lee Gun Suk, the second superintendent who accessed on October 1, 1949, made sure that first-term cadets have general liberal arts education and aeronautical science technology. A month before the Korean War broke out, May 14 of 1950, the third Superintendent, Major General Choi, Yong-Duk a former independence fighter. During the war, he made sure that the Academy made a stable rear withdrawal and that 171 second-term cadets were selected and given controlled education and training.

In an early stage of the Academy, it was run with two year round. However, with the break out of the Korean War, it was difficult to run it properly. The First year education of first-term cadets was held in relatively stable environment at Kimpo with general liberal arts and military training. Superintendent, commanders and staff officers made great efforts in calling in instructors with knowledge and reputation to make sure that cadets receive education of good quality and quantity. Second year education of first-term cadets after the break out of the Korean War was mainly aeronautical scientific technology necessary for air training. First-

erm cadets completed ground training of F-51 mustang fighters and L-4 plane in Daegu and Sachon base. They improved the basic skills early to participate in military operations as fighters.
